Tithonia

This group of annuals, herbaceous perennials and tender shrubs come from Mexico, the West Indies and Central America. They are bushy and grow 3 to 6 feet high. Their ovate to triangular leaves grow 6 to 12 inches long. The flowers resemble the single dahlia, 2 to 3 inches across. They are colored yellow or orange-scarlet with yellow center.


Pot Cultivation


This plant needs well-drained soil, which is moist to on the dry side; it will tolerate drought. It should be planted 2 to 3 feet apart in a sunny position.


Propagation


Start seeds inside at a 70-degree temperature, 6 to 8 weeks before it's safe to plant outside. They may also be sown directly outdoors where they are to grow as soon as the soil is warm.
